Welcome back, Peppersprayhub readers. Thanks for your continued support.
Here is the latest question that we received from one of our readers that I wanted to answer.
What is the shelf life of my pepper spray?
This is a common question from many pepper spray users. After all, the canisters or keychains that we carry are meant to be discharged when we need them the most. We depend on the OC spray reliability in the event of an attack.
In general, most pepper spray canisters remain operational for 2-4 years from their manufacturing date. However, these are under optimal conditions.
A big factor that could render the life of your pepper spray to last for a far shorter time period are weather conditions. If you store your 3 ounce Fox Labs canister in the glove compartment of your car year-round, the canister is susceptible to extreme heat or cold conditions. This can cause a serious reduction in the canister’s stream spurting capability.
We are not suggesting that you should not store the pepper spray canister in your glove compartment or any other area that is susceptible to extreme weather conditions. Whatever storage location works best from a self-defense perspective is fine by us. However, take this into consideration at the outset and plan to buy pepper spray more frequently, say every two years. After all, once you replace the old canister, it does not go to waste – it can now be used as a practice canister.
Please keep sending the questions and stay safe.
